Fresh new start for 2009

Hello fellow readers,

As many people starting a new year, I started making a list of things to do this year. Looking back I had achieved a lot with regards to my online presence. My twitter followers have increased exponentially towards the end of the year. Having started all of this less than 6 months ago the site has gained lots of traffic and i am super excited about the future.

The first change for 2009 was an entire blog migration from Blogengine.NET to the more popular WordPress. This change was due to increased frustration with Blogengine.NET and it’s complexly implemented plugins. I needed something customizable and simple to maintain. The decision is also based on the fact that I changed hosting providers(GoDaddy to DreamHost). This meant switching from asp.net to php unfortunately, but I think it might pay off in the long run.

I plan on posting more often and integrating my “tip-a-day” twitted feed as part of the blog. I microblog on twitter more often then I post on my actual blog. Currently about 80:20 ratio. I’m going to try and bring that closer to a 70:30. This will be largely made possible by being able to post from my iPhone or at least start drafts on it. I have a busy semester coming up, so the majority of posts will start rolling in towards the end of April.

My sincere apologies about the I porter posts which have had the images posted removed. I will gradually be going through the guides and replacing the images manually.

Until the next time…

Make sure to follow me on twitter @filipmares for regular updates and announcements.

…and just because i’m cool

Update: tip-a-day, new theme

I’ve been pretty absent on the blog, so been trying to tweet a lot more often on Twitter. It take much less time and is incredibly convenient. Eventually i decided last week to start a daily tweet about tech/apps i use often. I used the hashtag #tip-a-day.

I’m also palying around with a new theme to compliment my content and future extensions better. I got the theme at Onesoft which turns out to be a great source for BlogEngine 1.4.5 themes. One of these days, if i got time, i should give back to the BlogEngine community with a theme or extension. Stay Tuned!

If you want to track my ‘tip-a-day’ tweets here is the RSS feed link

BlogEngine 1.4 Out!!!

With the new release of BlogEngine 1.4 i decided to upgrade. Glad i did…

Major Updates:

  • Tag selector when adding new posts
  • Subcategories
  • Password encryption
  • Improved live comment preview
  • Hierarchical pages in the control panel
  • Smarter comment spam protection
  • Performance improvements
  • Drag and Drop Customzable SideBar Widget

I must say the new impovement of the new BlogEngine are impressive. The easily customizable widgets using Ajax are awesome. I was done changing my sidepanel in minutes rather than changing source code and creating my own user controls. Although a great addition, old themes do not funtion with the new funtionality and i’m sure it’ll be a while till themes for 1.4 pop up in the wild. Keep tuned.
