A bunch of bad Apples

A new episode of the Simpsons aired last night and it poked a little humour at something i blab about everyday to one of my friends; APPLE. The clips below (via Engadget) poke fun at everything from the G4 Cube, IPod, IPhone and of course, Steve Jobs. A lot of the comments are very in-you-face kind of humour and clearly explained to the non-tech crowd. Summary is basically:

  • Overpriced
  • Most users sport them for pure bragging rights and are willing to pay for the Apple tax
  • Steve Jobs knows everything and tells us what’s cool
  • Mess with functionality for the pure sake of Form

As we find ourselves in this economic low, I find it ridiculous that companies like Apple got to coast through with overpriced merchandise and get to take advantage of people who most likely can’t/shouldn’t afford these products. In an interview a month or so ago, Jobs had said their are not stooping down as low as netbook manufacturers, because frankly the products would not be of quality. They chose to address an elite crowd of customers who are willing to pay the premium. This leaving the majority of the people drooling over the flashy gear and willing to go into debt to have them. On Black Friday last week everyone waited anxiously on the discounts on for MAC hardware ware only to be disappointed with the $50-$150 rebates. Even with the lower prices, their notebooks are overpriced.

As mentioned in the last Apple Keynote, the now have “10%  of the home computer market“. What they failed to mention is that this is in the OEM market alongside DELL, HP, Sony, etc. This does not take into account all pc users and custom built PCs. I would estimate their market somewhere around 4% optimistically. When tailoring to such a small market share how can one be so strict on the high pricing . You’d think that with all the Apple switchers adds we see on TV Apple cares about gaining ground on Microsoft. Price the items lower and people will buy them, or at least try them out.

Don’t say Windows sucks, PCs are boring and MACs are good for media creation and editing.

  • Even Linux supporters have stated that their distros are not better, but merely a preference. Running a Mac as opposed to a PC is a preference and nothing more. This is definitely not a movement. As Paul Thurott mentioned in one of his latest posts: “Apple and its users are mistaking simple with easy”.
    • Don’t take away my buttons
    • track pad gestures are a gimmick
    • unibody design is pointless and expensive. Innovations should save money and pass that on to the end users.
  • PCs are far from boring. They are customizable, affordable and sometimes damn attractive. Companies such as Dell, Alienware, Falcon Northwest, Asus, HP are constantly changing their product lines to great products, but no one holds keynotes and makes a big fuss. It creates diversity and originality most of the time in a user base. Release often and people will not be bored (BTW, how’s that MAC mini doing :p). Products are priced well and sell decently.  Between all these manufactures there are plenty of styles and configuration to satisfy pretty much any consumer. They also get a variety of colours as opposed to Black, White and Aluminium.
  • The latest release from Adobe, CS4 runs significantly faster on PCs with x64 architecture. From what I have been reading, a lot of production companies have switched over a few machines for encoding video material already and saved money on the hardware too.

Don’t poke fun of Microsoft for “spending all their money” on advertising rather than fixing Vista bugs

  • Apple spends $500 million (13% of SG&A Budget) this year alone on switcher adds and IPod/IPhone adds. That seems to me like a lot of money to throw at consumers advertising when remaining a Luxury Electronics manufacturer.

I predict:

  • Apple will suffer through the next 6-8 months and sales figures will show
  • Zune flash players will outsell the IPod Nano with the current pricing scheme
  • MacWorld won’t bring anything groundbreaking except small refreshes and the usual Mac user burn on purchases previous to the show
  • Either the Mac Mini will be killed off or it will get the nVidia treatment
  • Snow Leopard will bore fanboys to death

Wake up Apple! Rant done…

Still Here and World didn’t End…

Well it finally happened after a month long delay; the Hadron Collider started it’s experiments this morning at 9:00am CEST. Many believed that the beams of light could cause little black holes ending the world that we live in and everything around it. So I hope that everyone didn’t go out and live their “final” moments doing something they regret right now…

We live to see another day and hopefully with the help of the experiments figure out a way to teleport me around the world.

Finally here: the Bold

Finally after over a month of speculation on the release date it seems Rogers Wireless will be releasing the Bold on August 21st. The release comes almost a month after my review of the unit. Whether it’s too little too late, we’ll have to see as the smart phone race is still not over:

  • Apple’s IPhone is having 3G connection issues and MobileMe is plagues with downtimes and MS synchronization issues (link)
  • Nokia’s E71 is still to be offered by a North American cell phone carrier
  • HTC’s android phone (Dream) is to be released late Q4 (link)

The one thing going for the above handsets are pricing. If the leaked Bold pricing turns out to be true, sales will definitely suffer with consumers. $399 is an outrageous price to pay for a phone with only 1GB memory that does a lot of things other smart phones do. Mind you it does it better.

So how much are you willing to pay for the Bold?

Rogers caves!!!

Due to the high publicity of ruinediphone.com and probably some pressure form Apple, Rogers/Fido has come out with a new data plan option:

“Fido to unleash iPhone 3G… two hours sooner with limited time promotional pricing

Montreal flagship store opens early for July 11 iPhone 3G launch
TORONTO, July 9 /CNW/ - In anticipation of iPhone 3G launch, Fido,
Canada's fourth largest wireless provider that's number one in customer
satisfaction,(*) today announced plans to open the doors of Fido's flagship
store in Montreal two hours early on July 11. Starting at 8:00 a.m. on July
11, customers will be able to purchase the new iPhone 3G in advance of regular
store hours at a special launch day event at the Fido flagship store at 1004
rue St. Catherine Ouest, Montreal. Be among the first in Canada to get the
next generation iPhone 3G and have the choice of a 6GB data plan through a
limited time promotional price offer.
"Fido is excited to bring iPhone 3G to Canadians with the choice of even
more data," said Sylvain Roy, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Fido.
"iPhone 3G is the perfect device to complement our customers' urban lifestyle,
with its amazing web browsing capabilities, iconic design and interface, and
high speed network access."
iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G
networking that is twice as fast(xx) as the first generation iPhone, built-in
GPS for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which
includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of
third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone SDK.
Customers who attend the launch day event at Montreal's flagship Fido
store will be treated to a free early bird breakfast and have a chance to win
Fido prizes.
Effective July 11, and as a limited time promotional offer for customers
who activate until August 31, 2008 on a three year contract, a data-only
offering of 6GB of data for $30 per month is being made available that can be
added to any in-market voice plan. For example, with 6GB of data, iPhone 3G
users can visit 35,952 web pages, or send and receive 157,286 emails, or watch
6,292 minutes of YouTube videos each and every month.(xxx)
New Canadian iPhone 3G customers will also have the choice to select from
Fido's existing voice and smartphone data plans and/or additional features to
best suit their needs or from Fido's specific value bundled iPhone 3G plans.
Existing Fido customers can also keep their current voice service plan and
select a separate smartphone data plan to meet their needs or choose from
other plans after checking their individual upgrade eligibility.
Starting July 11, iPhone 3G will be available at participating locations
across Canada, including select Fido retail locations and at the following
specially selected authorized Fido dealers: WirelessWave, TBooth and Wireless
etc. iPhone 3G can be purchased online at www.fido.ca and through Fido
customer service at 1-888-481-3436. Existing Fido customers in their renewal
window can use their FidoDollars towards purchase. For a complete store
listing, visit www.fido.ca. Due to anticipated high demand, there is a maximum
purchase of two iPhone 3G per customer." @ Source

From the sounds of it, this only applies to Apple 3G activations. This is however good news since now and IPhone can be purchased without a data plan and this or any of the data plans can be added to it if wished. I’m presonally surprised Rogers decided to change their plans so close to release. I would have guessed they would change it after release realizing poor sales figures. I for one will purchase a unit on opening day sans data BS as I already have my plan and data charges fixed.

Stay tuned for detailed no B.S. review of the IPhone 3G.

Update: On Wednesday July 9, at 3:00 pm EDT David McGuinty, MP, will be making an official video statement on ruinediphone.com. Please check back then. link

Blackberry 9500 Thunder OS Pics Leaked

Leaked today on the Internet today were images of 4.7(unlike the expected 5.0) OS of the much anticipated IPhone “killer” from RIM. Spec’d out to have a 360×480 resolution, places it at slightly bigger than the IPhone form factor.  The device is said to come in both GSM and CDMA flavours.

The Thunder will run a carrier music store similar to the iPhone’s iTunes store and will allow users to purchase songs right from their device. This in turn can make it the “Jesus Phone” of the CDMA networks.

The 9500 will also have a more advanced media player than current models supporting a variety of audio/video codecs.

SOURCE: Close source has mentioned that the Thunder does posses WIFI,3G, GPS and an accelerometer. It however does not have multi-touch support yet. I could not get confirmation on wether it’s hardware or software implementation yet. This is scheduled for release sometime in 2009 however, so all this can change.

RUMOR: Apple to ship less units to Canada than planned and diverting rest to Europe

As expected from the previews post, Rogers is most likely to get the short end of the stick. Rumor has it that due to the negative publicity from the ruinediphone.com petition site, Apple will now ship a smaller quantity of IPhones to Canada than expected. The remaining IPhones will be shipped to Europe instead. It is expected that Fido and Rogers stores will carry only 10-20 units for sale on opening day.

This rumor is almost confirmed after the GSM giant confirmed that it is laying off a number of new part time employees at its retail locations. The new hires were a result of the anticipated high number of IPhone sales in the first weeks. Rogers later released a statement on Monday July 7th that retail outlets are cutting back individually and that the decision was not made Canada wide.

As the rumors circulate the internets, the success of the IPhone in Canada seems doubtful at this time. More and more people are finding the online IPhone boycotting petition site and signing it. The numbers have risen to 44,256 as of this post.
Whatever the case may be, all rumors will be answered at the end of Friday when the IPhone is released World wide.

Canadian outcry over Rogers IPhone plans

An issue that is id brought up on a regular basis by colleagues and friends is that Rogers Wireless pricing are unbearable. On June 27 2008, Rogers announced their new IPhone plans pricing. Within hours of the press release, a petition website protesting the new rates went up online. By the end of the day, there were 15,000 signatures already posted including a public complaint letter urging the involvement of Steve Jobs. Though I am doubtful of his future involvement with the issue, a chance still remains. Needless to say this all attracted lots of media attention from placed such as CNN, Washington Post, Globe and Mail, CTV, Radio-Canada, CBC Reuters Canada, Gizmodo, Tuaw, RedEye Chicago, The Gazette and of course YouTube.

As of today (July 1st) the petition stands at 23,343 and growing at a constant rate. I hope that then numbers keep increasing and reach 6 digits before July 11th. This will send out a message that the customers will not even buy the almighty Jesus Phone if it means being nickel n’ dime’d by such a large corporation.

So please on July 11th, don’t wait in line or walk into your local Apple store and Rogers Wireless booth; stay home, go outside, go see a movie (Hancock Wink) or spend some time with your loved ones. You can make a difference…

RUMOR: Blackberry Bold delayed till mid-August for AT&T in the US

RUMOR: Bold’s release is delayed till mid-August due to Software, battery and overheatign issues. These only seem to be delayed for the US carrier, while the Canadian carrier, Rogers, is expected to realease on schedule within the next couple of weeks.

SOURCE: Close source Sealed has said that (as of 2 weeks ago) there is about a 50-60% failure rate on Blackberry Bolds. Most of the test units suffering from malfunctioning software. Though the high failure rate, RIM is apparantley known to having major issues with products right up to delivery time.

I wonder if John Mayer got a dud. Odds are he would have a few units handy for replacement. All in all, don’t believe the hype of Iphone killer just yet!
