Context
After Microsoft acquired Talko, I worked on redesigning and re-architecting the Skype calling experience for audio and video communication across desktop and mobile.
Role & Scope
I led development for the Skype calling UI across desktop and mobile, shipped key features, increased unit-test coverage, and onboarded engineers.
I worked within a broader Skype client organization that was aligning web, iOS, and Android experiences on shared engineering foundations.
Constraints
- Calling interfaces had to stay high-performance and real-time while handling live audio/video sessions.
- Feature parity across web, iOS, and Android required shared architecture without sacrificing platform quality.
- The migration had to improve accessibility and maintainability while supporting ongoing feature delivery.
Key Decisions & Contributions
- Our team built shared components with ReactXP (a Skype-built cross-platform framework for web, iOS, and Android) to unify calling UI behavior.
- We reinforced the migration with shared component libraries and build tooling so multiple clients could ship from one architecture.
- I balanced feature delivery with test coverage growth and onboarding to keep execution stable as the architecture evolved.
Outcomes
- The ReactXP migration onboarded the Skype client organization onto a single performant, accessible codebase.
- Calling UI features shipped across desktop and mobile on shared foundations.
- Unit-test coverage increased during active feature development.
Reflection
This work sharpened my approach to cross-platform engineering: shared code is valuable only when performance and native-feeling interaction remain intact. I continue to prioritize architecture choices that reduce fragmentation without flattening product quality.
